The Jidai Festival
The Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) is often described as a “living museum of clothing.”
In this grand procession, approximately 2,000 participants parade through the streets of Kyoto wearing historically accurate costumes spanning 1,000 years—from the Heian period (beginning in 794), when Kyoto became Japan’s capital, through to the Meiji era.
Within this elegant procession reside the pride of past generations, prayers offered to the deities, and gratitude toward nature. It reflects a uniquely Japanese sensibility: rather than viewing nature merely as something to be used, the Japanese have long regarded it as a partner in coexistence—approaching it with both appreciation and reverence.
Through masterful craftsmanship, this work portrays that spiritual heritage. It is an artistic expression that conveys Japan’s enduring devotion to the preservation of history and its refined aesthetic consciousness.
